Google announced today that they are launching a new operating system that focuses on speed, simplicity and security. In the same way that they built their new web browser Google Chrome, Google have built their new operating system (Chrome OS) from the ground up  to better suit the needs of today’s user. When Microsoft Windows was first released, it wasn’t built to accommodate the internet, especially in the way that the internet has developed today. Google aim to tackle this by making it quicker and easier to use the internet in Chrome OS, while also creating an infrastructure that is virus and malware free. An operating system without the need for security updates.

The operating system will be rolled out to agreed Netbooks in the middle of 2010 (alongside Google’s mobile OS Android) and then spread to further systems thereafter. By the look of things, Google is trying to kill two birds with one stone (that holds a clear strategy); they are handling the evolving behaviour of users in the digital world in a way that can be very productive if executed correctly, while also being the first real player to attack Microsoft’s overwhelming market share of operating systems (currently at 90%; 96% for Netbooks)

It definitely seems that the war between Google and Microsoft has kicked off with Microsoft entering the search market with real intent, and Google entering the OS market with a fresh approach. With “Microsoft-haters” leaning towards Google, but the current mass market having to choose between what they know or something new (and probably leaning towards the first), it is difficult to predict how this will pan out. One thing is for sure, I think we can see some real groundbreaking opportunities with digital in the next few years.

I agree it's definitely going to be interesting.
Taking a more philosophical approach - while I think most people disliked MS because of the unfriendly, corporate giant it became; Google is becoming similar in many ways. It may be a good idea that there are two giants instead of one, but is it good enough?
What would be really awesome is an independent, open source OS that can work in a more friendly and simple way. You could say only a giant could go into this market and win, but I still hope there is room for the smaller players (like Mozilla is with the FF browser).

Agree!... Perhaps in the near future we can see a duopoly instead than two monopolies... don't you think? (Hmmmm.... this looks like a Canadian afirmation )

I completely agree. It would be great to see another Mozilla as it does appear that both companies are looking for world domination!
